CAROLYN LECHUSZA, CELLO

Carolyn Lechusza, improvisor on acoustic cello, electric cello, and alto violin. Studied with Luis Garcia-Renart, a Spanish cellist that studied with both Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich, two of the greatest cellists of the 20th century. He was also the cello teacher of the great improvisor Tom Cora. Her 14 years of study with Garcia-Renart resulted in an in-depth study of J.S.Bach, namely of the Six Cello Suites and Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Sonata and cello concerti No.1 and No.2, as well as historically documenting Shostakovich's personal remarks and suggestions to Garcia-Renart regarding those two pieces. Her forays in the classical music world include summers spent at Tanglewood, working with orchestral conductors such as Robert Spano and Leon Botstein, performing concerts with the American Symphony Orchestra as cello soloist in her own composition, and composition studies with Joan Tower and Daron Hagen. Her chamber music experience spans from basso continuo performance to contemporary classical music. Carolyn plays on a Neuner 1895 cello.

As an improvisor Carolyn has worked with Vinny Golia, Fred Frith, Joelle Leandre, Janet Feder, Alvin Curran, Cecil Taylor, Hans Bennink, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Michael Vlatkovich, Bert Turetzky, Chris Garcia and Mark Dresser. She performs with the groups Quarteto, MAD Trio, Iguana, and I2. She currently performs on a Yamaha Silent Cello Model SVC200SK. Her scholarly work to date has focused on the little known cellist and improvisor Charlotte Moorman and is compiled in her Master's Thesis from Mills College.

Carolyn has been playing with the Hutchins Consort as its alto violinist since 2004. She is one of the few professional alto violinists in the United States and currently plays on an instrument created by Dr. Carleen Hutchins. The same instrument was also performed on by Yo-Yo Ma in a recording of Bartok's Viola Concerto on The New York Album with David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (Sony, 1994).
