History:

ARCANUM is an electro-acoustic based multi-media quartet which was born through the collaborative work of Ori Barel and Alan Lechusza in 2005/06.  These two composer/performers were introduced through a chance meeting in Los Angeles as part of the Synchrony concert series.  The two began to work close and realized that their collaborative work shared a common ground. 

Incorporating the creative work of Gil Omry-Barel and Carolyn Lechusza Aquallo, ARCANUM found a strong position in the creative arts movement in Southern California.

 

Schedule of Events:

Artists Information:

Ori Barel

Ori Barel is a diverse contemporary music composer, who pursues musical interest in chamber and orchestral composition, live instrumental electric music performances and electro acoustic taped scores for dance, film and video installation.

 

Ori was born and raised in Israel. He studied composition with Raviv Gazit who was the head of the electro acoustic department in the Tel Aviv University. He later moved to Los Angeles and pursued his B.A. in music composition at UCLA. As a student, Ori has had the privilege to study with Roger Bourland and Paul Chihara.

 

His concert works have been performed by prominent performers worldwide, including Gan Lev, who is the principal saxophone player for the Israeli Philarmonic, Eran Borovich, Antonis Anissegos, the Berlin based Cornucopia Ensemble and Alan and Carolyn Lechusza. In 2004 he was the youngest composer to be performed at the prestigious Santandler festival in Spain.

 

As a composer for video installations, Ori has collaborated with artists such as Adam Berg, and Gil Omry-Barel. These compositions have been exhibited in museums, galleries and festivals in Israel, France, Berlin and the U.S. Among them are the Haifa Museum, the ArtistÂ’s House Jerusalem, Cinematheque Tel-Aviv; and in the Los Angeles area, at Overtones Gallery, Mint Gallery in CalArts and the Wind Tunnel Exhibition and Event Hall at Art Center College of Design.   

Gil Omry-Barel

Gil Omry-Barel is a media artist. By means of video and image processing, her work explores processes of perception of time and motion and engages with the theoretical questions these processes raise.

Gil has exhibited in festivals and galleries throughout the world, including France, Germany, Israel, Greece, Cuba and the United States. Recently, she participated in a group show curated by Jan Tumlir, titled The Lateral Slip (2005), alongside works of Ed Ruscha, Bas Jan Ader, Robert Flick, John Divola, Jessica Bronson, Benjamin Weissman & Jim Shaw, Pae White and more. She has collaborated with Ori Barel on video and sound installations, as well as with dancers for an interdisciplinary performance work of video, dance and music. In Israel, she has had the opportunity to take part in creating the first interactive Poetry CD, The Optical Fiber, for the renowned Israeli poet, Maya Bejerano.

Gil studied Art and Digital Media at the Camera Obscura School of Arts, in Israel. In 2004, she earned her MFA in Art and Integrated Media from CalArts, Los Angeles, where she had the privilege of studying with Charles Gaines. Currently Gil lives and works in Los Angeles.

  

Carolyn Lechusza Aquallo

Carolyn Lechusza, improvisor on acoustic cello, electric cello, and alto violin. Studied with Luis Garcia-Renart, a Spanish cellist that studied with both Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich, two of the greatest cellists of the 20th century. He was also the cello teacher of the great improvisor Tom Cora. Her 14 years of study with Garcia-Renart resulted in an in-depth study of J.S.Bach, namely of the Six Cello Suites and Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Sonata and cello concerti No.1 and No.2, as well as historically documenting Shostakovich's personal remarks and suggestions to Garcia-Renart regarding those two pieces. Her forays in the classical music world include summers spent at Tanglewood, working with orchestral conductors such as Robert Spano and Leon Botstein, performing concerts with the American Symphony Orchestra as cello soloist in her own composition, and composition studies with Joan Tower and Daron Hagen. Her chamber music experience spans from basso continuo performance to contemporary classical music. Carolyn plays on a Neuner 1895 cello. 

Alan Lechusza

Alan Lechusza is quickly gaining ground as one of the new woodwind players/improvisers to watch. His versatility on all the woodwind instruments (western and non-western aero phones) both as an improviser and as a studio musician has led him to be a much sought after performer. As a performer Alan has had the opportunity to work within many different genres (including hip-hop/rap, heavy metal, new age, baroque period-style performances, orchestral work, film scores, etc.) and premiering numerous works including those by Wadadda Leo Smith, Will Ogden, Christopher Adler, Vinny Golia and more. He has performed and toured in Europe(Eastern and Western), Canada, Japan and all around the United States with; Ark Ensemble, The Aulos Saxophone Quartet and The Charles Owens Saxophone Quartet. He performs regularly with: Quartetto Nuevo, The Christopher Adler Trio, Radius, AMH Trio, The Michael Vlatkovich Ensembles, The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, Forward Funk, Jagratti, The World Reform Orchestra, Trio Consensus, and numerous others. He has performed with: Benny Maupin, Vinny Golia, George Harper, Anthony Davis, George Lewis, Hamiet Bluiett, Bertrum Turetsky, JD Parron, Alex and Niles Cline, Ken Rosser, Leo Potts, Jack Riedling, Randy Gloss, James Newton, Kai Akagi, Charles Owens, Dr. Art Davis, Peter Kowald, Hamied Drake, Adam Rudolph, Sherman Ferguson, Paul Smoker, and many others.
